Andrzej Sapkowski was born in 1948 in Lodz. Graduated from the University of Lodz, faculty of foreign trade. After graduation, he worked in trade.
In 1986, the first fantasy novel "Wiedźmin" was published, in which Sapkowski created his main character - the Witcher, a master of sword and sorcery who fights monsters. The first few Witcher stories were published in the collection Wiedźmin (1990).
In 1993, two collections were published at once: consisting of seven short stories under one common title "Ostatnie życzenie" ("Last Wish") and consisting of six stories, united by the title "Miecz przeznaczenia" ("Sword of Destiny"). It was in this composition that these works became the official beginning of the Witcher cycle.
In 1994, Sapkowski, moving away from the small form, began a five-volume saga about the Witcher and the Witcher: 1994 - "Krew elfów" ("Blood of the Elves"), 1995 - "Czas pogardy" ("Hour of Contempt"), 1996. - "Chrzest ognia" ("Baptism by Fire"), 1997 - "Wieża Jaskolki" ("Swallow's Tower"), 1999 - "Pani Jeziora" ("Lady of the Lake").
In 1995, The World of King Arthur was published - an essay in which the author tried to understand the reasons for the popularity of the Arthurian legends among modern readers and the influence of these legends on the work of some authors of the 20th century. The book also includes the short story "Maladie" - its own variation based on the legend of Tristan and Iseult.
In 1998, for "the most interesting contribution to Polish culture" Sapkowski was awarded the prestigious award of the weekly "Polityka".
Among the merits of the author there are also a lot of critical articles about fantasy and for those who are fond of it, such as "A guide for beginner fantasy writers", "Pie, or is there no gold in the Gray Mountains" (an article about modern problems of fantasy as literature), "Sword , magic, screen” (about film adaptations) and many others.
In 2001, a great work on mythological creatures was published - "Rękopis znaleziony w Smoczej Jaskini" ("Bestiary"), in which, with the humor inherent in the author, the world of creatures inhabiting our world and the worlds of fantasy writers is revealed.
In 2002, a film was made based on several stories about the witcher Geralt.
