Susan Collins
Biography and information about the author
Susan Collins is a contemporary American writer, born in 1962 in the village of Sandy Hook, near New Town. The daughter of an Air Force officer, she spent most of her childhood traveling with her father. When she grew up, she began to study drama at New York University, where she later received a Master of Fine Arts degree.
Her career began in 1991, when Susan began writing scripts for various children's programs (series, shows and animated series) on television. The writer got on the Nickelodeon TV channel, where she worked on such projects as Clarissa Knows Everything, The Mysterious Case of Shelby Wu, Little Bear and others. In addition, Susan became the lead author of the animated series Clifford's Puppy Days and one of the creators of Generation O! for the channel "Kids WB". It was the work on the latter that became a turning point in Collins' career - there she met the children's writer James Proimos, who persuaded her to try writing a full-fledged book for children. Inspired by Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Collins wrote a fairy tale for children. The debut of 2003 was so successful that the author continued describing the adventures of the protagonist in five more books. The next book by Susan Collins was no longer aimed at young readers, but at teenagers. After working on Chronicles, Collins thought about writing a book for a more mature audience. So in 2008, a new bestseller, The Hunger Games, was born.
The writer claims that the idea for this novel came from the ancient Greek myths of Theseus and the Minotaur, and partly from the memories of her father, an Air Force veteran, about poverty, hunger and the consequences of war. The book topped the New York Times best-selling book rankings for sixty weeks, and Time magazine named Susan Collins one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2010. Catching Fire, the second novel in the trilogy, was released in September 2009, and the third, Mockingjay, was released on August 24, 2010.
