Haruki Murakami was born in 1949 in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, in the family of a teacher of classical philology.
Grandfather Haruki Murakami, a Buddhist priest, kept a small temple. My father taught Japanese language and literature at school, and in his spare time he also studied Buddhist enlightenment.
He studied majoring in classical drama at the Theater Arts Department of Waseda University. In 1950, the writer’s family moved to the city of Asia, a suburb of the port of Kobe (Hyogo Prefecture). In 1971, he married a classmate Yoko, with whom he still lives, there are no children. In 1974, he opened his Peter Kat jazz bar in Kokubunji, Tokyo. In 1977, he moved with his bar to a calmer area of the city, Sandagaya.
